Bitter Queen

Just a short note to let you know I finished your book, and loved it. No doubt Renslow's life was large in the making, and you and Owen did a great job pulling it all together in the telling.

I follow gay history and mob history, and your treatment of how the two intertwined was the most honest approach to the subject I've ever encountered.

Many of the gay New York historians and journalists are still uncomfortable with the historic role of the mob in some gay bars -- perhaps because it's still allegedly a live issue for a few bars -- other than with the gratuitous reference to the Stonewall Inn, and perhaps some day they will be as unflinching in their work as you were in Leatherman.

Maybe I missed it but I didn't see any reference in your book to the fact that Johnny Gattuso -- in addition to being a mob guy -- was also a Cook County sheriff's deputy. As the old saying goes: organized crime cannot exist without public corruption.
